Slots - Buying Features & Bonus Rounds

How Feature Buys work, what they cost, and why they are high volatility.

Written by Danny

In modern online slots, the bonus round is often where the most exciting gameplay, unique mechanics, and largest payout potentials reside. Traditionally, players have had to spin the reels repeatedly in the regular game, hoping to land a specific combination of scatter or bonus symbols to trigger these rounds.

However, the Feature Buy (also known as a Bonus Buy) allows players to bypass the regular game entirely and gain instant entry into the slot’s primary bonus feature for a set fee.

What is a Feature Buy?

A Feature Buy is an optional in-game mechanic. When clicking the "Buy Bonus" or "Feature Buy" button—usually located prominently on the side of the slot grid—the game presents the player with a fixed cost to trigger the bonus round on the very next spin.

This cost is calculated as a multiplier of the player's current base bet. While the cost varies depending on the slot game and the volatility of its bonus round, a standard feature buy typically ranges from 50x to 100x the base bet, though some highly volatile games may charge several hundred times the stake.

Example: If a player is playing a slot with a base bet of $1.00 and the feature buy cost is 100x the bet, the player can pay a flat fee of $100.00 to immediately trigger the free spins or bonus round.

Does buying a feature guarantee a profit?

Buying a feature only guarantees access to the bonus round; it does not guarantee a winning return. Because slot outcomes are governed by Random Number Generators (RNGs), a purchased bonus round can return anything from zero to the game’s maximum win capability. It is entirely possible to purchase a bonus for 100x the bet and walk away with a payout that is worth only a fraction of the purchase price.

Is the Return to Player (RTP) different when buying a feature?

In many slot games, the theoretical Return to Player (RTP) percentage is slightly higher during a Feature Buy compared to standard base game play. For instance, a game's standard RTP might be 96.2%, but it may increase to 96.5% when utilising the bonus buy option. However, this minor statistical increase does not guarantee a win on any individual purchase, as the game's overall volatility remains very high.

Why are feature buys so volatile?

Normal gameplay spreads a player's bankroll across many small spins. In contrast, buying a feature concentrates a large portion of the bankroll into a single, high-risk event. This high volatility means players can experience rapid balance swings, making strict bankroll management essential.

Regional Availability & Regulations

It is important to note that the Feature Buy option is not available in all regions or jurisdictions due to local gambling regulations.

Regulatory bodies in certain countries have banned this feature. Should this feature not be available in a player's region, there will be no option to buy a bonus round or feature. However, players will still be able to enjoy the slot game and trigger the bonus rounds organically through regular gameplay.
